It includes important researched-based concepts with references, relevant visuals, enjoyable activities, and useful live Internet links.

In case you are wondering where you just landed from cyberspace to reach this web page, here's a little background. One important note...the live links below (click here) should be set up by Monday, March 30. 2009.

You are in my community blog concerning my Creating Careers with Confidence PowerPoint. NEW CAREER LIFE TRANSITIONS BLOG
Pete and I have started a new blog concerning people trying to deal more effectively with career and life transitions. It is our belief that a blogging platform can open up channels of communication and expression and provide folks with an exciting alternative as they experience the typical struggles associated with playing multiple roles while also focusing on their shifting employmen t situations. We hope you will consider joining the LWPS family and experience the power of networking. To view this blog, click here. At Pete's request and thinking it did make sense - here's my first blog contribution.

Currently I'm sitting quite smuggly (in shorts and t-shirt) in New Zealand where the day has started bright and sunny and is now 25 degrees - yep summer has been here a while and looks like staying for a little longer!  Knowing most of you are in a northern hemisphere winter - just wanted you to know how the other half of the world is living at this moment!

It is therefore summer holidays - but a chance to think and reflect without the hiatus of normal 'work' stuff crowding in.  Mostly thinking about family and what we will do from one day to the next to entertain ourselves as my wife and I have a mermaid as a 10 year old daughter!

Anyway - work stuff does creep in though.  Next year is another IAEVG conference in Wellington http://www.avenues.co.nz/careers/index.html - the last one was in 2002.  One of the themes is transformational technology.  I'm hoping that I will be able to co-present with Tannis Goddard from Canada and do a workshop on e-guidance.  We did this in Hobart last year, where Tannis was also a keynote, at the Australian Association of Career Counsellors http://www.cdaa.org.au/.  Interestingly speaking about delivering careers services online has started to gain traction in Australia.  The year before - maybe 30 people turned up to a workshop - this year we had 80!!

I think mainly allaying people's fears that online is a legitimate medium for delivery of servides is maiking a difference - you don't just have to be sat with someone f2f to deliver an effective service!  Just ask the Samaritans phone service in the UK!  Through my work at Career Services (the NZ Government department charged with delivering careers info, advice and guidance to NZers) I found it so frustrating trying to discuss the use of career practitioners using an online tool with clients!

So I'm gearing up for a conference where we may be able to get more practitioners to consider incorporating this form of delivery for their clients.  Norm Amundson points out that we have certain social conventions in the counselling relationship - which we have come to accept but the history and purpose we have forgotten.  These conventions I believe are the blocks to online delivery of career guidance.  Often this is the starting point for my workshops - 'why don't we do this?'

Well that's enough thinking for today - need a mince pie by the pool!

Take something that you enjoy doing, like maybe you enjoy doing interviews, and you start to talk about where the joy comes from. Then you examine your love for this specific activity and I ask more questions that lead you to explore at an expanded level. Through this process you will usually develop a better understanding of what it is about interviewing that makes it so interesting for you.  Hopefully you will also start to see that it actually reflects some bigger patterns in your life. So with the PIE we take a small joyful activity in your life, and through elaboration and analysis begin to see that it reflects some of your life values and your desires for a good life. With the Pattern Identificat ion Exercise, it is not that shallow little stone ski pping across the water, but the stone sinking down to the bottom. And as you get more and more information about this one thing, you find patterns that reflect the whole thing, different parts of your life. There are connections.

When working on your whole relationship with yourself, and in trying to move forward in your life goals and decisions, ask yourself this:

HOW DIFFERENT WOULD YOUR LIFE BE IF YOU TREATED YOURSELF THE WAY THAT YOU TRY TO TREAT OTHER PEOPLE?

The answers I've gotten as a result of asking this one question have been profound!  We, as humans, tend to take care of everybody else before taking care of ourselves; therefore we tend to treat others so much better than we do ourselves!  Try to imagine a life in which you treated yourself just as well as you do others....what would that look like?....how different would things be for  you?.... You can neglect yourself for awhile; but, over time, you will notice that areas of your life begin to suffer when you do so.  Treating yourself well is a necessary key to having a fulfilling life that works.  Start your spring out on the right path for you, try treating yourself as well as you do others!

    Happy Easter to All!!

An aggregating post (AP) is simply a post that contains a list of links to other posts or webpages. It is like an index or table of contents.

The purpose of an AP is to collect links to similar posts to make it easier for you (and others) to locate and access posts with one, two or three mouse clicks.

Let's say you create fifty (50) posts in your personal blog. You could click on "Your Blog" and see the full content of all of the posts, or you could add your initials to the "Keywords" section of each of your posts and then click on one hyperlink instance of your initials to see the title of all of your posts. But neither method organizes your posts.

Of course, you can add keyword tags to take you to posts as long as that exact keyword is used more than once.

As I mentioned in this post (that describes how you can develop the very important area in the upper right sidebar called your "Brief Description" (BD) of your blog), you can place a link there (in your BD) to one of your key APs and that post can organize your fifty posts. (See this post about the four (4) most important posts in your personal blog that I mention next.)

Your "My LifeWork Portal" could be that key AP. In it you could have links to your top three (3) APs - "My LifeWork Plans", "My LifeWork ePortfolios", and ""My LifeWork Profiles", as well as APs for all your other posts that do not logically belong in these three. Each of these three 1st level APs could have subordinate APs. For example, click on this example of a "My LifeWork Plans" AP. Note how it links to three other subordinate - but related - APs.

Thus, if you wanted to find the post you created to collect information about your resume, you could do a search for the tag "resumes" or you could click your mouse four (4) times down this chain of APs starting in your Brief Description area (BD) -> My LifeWork Portal -> My LifeWork Plans -> My Job Search Plan -> My Resumes.

Note that three (3) mouse clicks through APs that each have an average of 5 links gives you access to 125 posts.
