My invocation prior to our luncheon in the Caucus Room of the Cannon Building in Washington, D.C. on Friday, July 11, 2008 at the close of the NCDA 2008 Global Conference.

However we may choose to experience, appreciate, and express our spiritual nature that is rooted in our unqiueness, our life story, our culture, faith tradition, the practice or non practice of a specific religion, or simply our awareness of an essence many refer to as God, but somehow connects all of us as humanity, as we now come together to break bread - Bless the food we are about to eat, that it may nourish our bodies for the work that needs to be done, Bless the hands that prepared it and now serve it.

We ask for wisdom of mind and heart that we learn to honor our sameness and at the same time celebrate our diversity.

Let us form effective alliances based in integrity and right relationships that give fruits to important insights and appropriate advocacy that promotes and delivers excellent career development for all people across career and life roles and throughout their life span and doing this in ways that support peoples fullest potential and contributions of their unique talents to their families, communities, our nation and our planet.

We seek to accomplish greatness in the work we do, with a humble spirit and firmly grounded in gratitude.

Let us now enjoy our most delicious and excellent lunch.

Dr. JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey's "Research Briefing" (to be added).

In addition to the Professional Development Institute (PDI) workshops I have offered at NCDA, ACA and ACPA, colleagues have asked about further DOVE trainings, specifically in-depth two-day trainings that will prepare a participant to more fully learn and practice the DOVE process in their local settings. A dear friend and colleague, Dr. Darrell Anthony Luzzo, Senior Vice President, Education at JAWorldwide.org has been a strong supporter of my work with SPIRITUALITY, CALLINGS, and DOVE and has encouraged me to write more about DOVE and provide in-depth trainings for interested persons. Two other wonderful friends and colleagues, Angela Byars-Winston and Don Schutt, worked with myself and Darrell to bring about the first ever DOVE Level 1 two-day training at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I anticipate three different progressive levels of DOVE trainings starting with Level 1.

It is possible to develop a process that is rooted in a spiritual base and sensitive to one's faith tradition or lack thereof, including a variety of well documented career development theories such as developmental, person-environment matching, values-based, decision-making, and constructivist approaches. As this website is expanded, a reference for these theories, including a theory-synthesis for A SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE APPROACH, will be shared with readers.

Much of this focus comes from an inspiration that bubbled forth in November 1978 as DOVE and has been evolving these past thirty years. It continues to evolve. It is my hope and goal that through workshops, discussions, video-taped case studies, and live DOVE experiences, those interested in the role of spirituality and calling and this powerful values clarification process, DOVE, will come to better understand it and use it in the context of their local settings.
