Sally Gelardin :: Blog :: Attachment 3: Major groups of internal supports

December 21, 2006

The following four or five sources of internal support are usually assessed in the field of career development: (a) your skills, (b) your interests, (c) your values, (d) your personality traits, (e) your environmental preferences.

It would be of value to an individual who is in the process of making a career decision or a transition to examine two additional personal attributes: (a) your primary motivations and (b) your learning style.

(a) According to English (1998), our motivations can be divided into following three categories: security, passion, or quiescence.

(b) Your learning style can be divided into five categories: visual-spatial (sight), musical (sound), interpersonal (storytelling), kinesthetic (moving), intrapsychic (inner guidance). (Sturdevant, 1998). Along with these brain-based learning styles is your ability to be fully present in the “here and now” while making sense out of the past or preparing for the future. An example of this is to reflect on a past or future event and breathe deeply at the same time, or to visually scan your current surroundings while thinking about a problem that you need to solve. Gelardin, 2006). To participate in discussion on this topic, register on LWPS , a free career learning web platform, and view Entrepreneur eCommunity .
