  1. Acceess your LWPS account. (Click here if you need help.)
  2. On the far left side of the blue header, under "LifeWork Planning Services", you will see the link "Your Profile". When I ask you to click on it, you will leave this post. COPY the contents of this post and we will PASTE it (temporarily) into your profile.
  3. Click on "Edit this profile".
  4. In the first profile box under "Who am I?", PASTE the contents of your clipboard into this section. As we do each of the tasks, you can delete that text.
  5. In your "Who am I" section write a short introduction about yourself, or anything else you wish. (Come back later to expand you "Who am I" section. When you have time, look at LWPS profiles of other members.) Under "Access Restriction" (AR), click on "Public" if you want anyone to see your "Who am I?" section, click "Private" if you want no one but yourself to see it. If you belong to a community, and only want community members to see it, select that community AR.
  6. In the second profile box under "Brief Description", type anything you wish to appear in the "gold" box to the right, then change the AR for "Brief Description" to "Public". If you do "Optional" tasks in subsequent lesson activities, your will create a "Table of Contents" post and we will show you how to add a link to it in your gold box. NOTE: This is the only profile section that does not tolerate two or more contiguous spaces (blanks). If you want to have more than two spaces, as between two sentences, you must insert this html tag <BR> or all text AFTER the second blank space will not be displayed.
  7. Find another profile section called "Interests" and type in a few of your interests. Add your initials and change the AR for "Interests" to "Public".
  8. Enter information in any other profile section you wish and choose an appropriate AR for each.
  9. Remove any other instructions from your clipboard in your "Who am I" section.
  10. Scroll down to the bottom of your profile and click on "Save your profile". Note that the "Who am I", "Brief Description", "Interests" and any other sections you edited, now contain information, and see the text you added to your "gold" box ("Brief Description" in your porfile) Also note, that you will see profile sections that you marked "Private", but no one else will see them.
  11. You can edit your entries and change their ARs at any time as often as you wish.

If your name does not appear to the right of "Welcome" and above "LifeWork Planning Services" in the blue header, then do the following.

  1. Type lifeworkps.com into your browser's address box or click lifeworkps.com.
  2. If you are not taken to your personal weblog, then add a forward slash "/" followed by your username without any spaces.

I.e., I would enter: lifeworkps.com/hubbard; Sally Gelardin would enter: lifeworkps.com/sallyg; Ed Colozzi would enter: lifeworkps.com/edwardc

Now, make sure that your name (and your picture, if you uploaded it) appears in the box to the right below "You" and above "Recent Activity". If not, see item 2 above.

Note: LWPS etiquette says that you can make a stranger your friend, if you like what they say and want to learn more about them.

  1. Acceess your LWPS account. (Click here if you need help.)

  2. Several ways to find a friend

    1. If you know the LWPS username for a person who is currently registered on LWPS and whom you would like as your friend type it after lifeworkps.com (i.e., lifeworkps.com/sallyg) into your browser's address box.
    2. If you know the user's name, type their first or their last name into the "Search" box in the lower right sidebar. If there is a match, you will see it listed on the left side. If you see several names listed, click on the most appropriate one.
    3. If step 1 and 2 yielded no results, try the following:

      1. Search for someone else you know who might have made the person you are searching for their friend. (Search for “Pete Hubbard” if you wish.)
      2. Search for a tag/keyword they may have used in one or more of their posts, such are "Introduction".

  3. When you find the person, look on the right sidebar at the bottom of gold box in the upper right corner and click on "Make this person your friend". The person's name will be added to the list under your "Friends".

NOTE 1: If you want to look at their public personal weblog posts, look in your right sidebar for your friend, click on their name to go to their personal blog, then click on "Personal Blog". (If they have created a Group Access Restriction (GAR) listing your username, you will see those posts as well and the post title will begin with "[Restricted]".)

NOTE 2: You can view public posts of only your friends, by clicking on "Friends blogs" above. I make it a habit to click this link first, before I click on "View all posts" to see what others have posted recently.

  4. NOTE: A maximum of eight (8) friends are listed under "Friends" in the right sidebar. If you have more than eight friends, click on the "Friends Screen (FOAF)" link to see ALL of your friends.

If you want to remove someone from your friends list, just go to their weblog and click on this sentence at the bottom of their gold box: "Click here to remove this person from your friends list",

Return to the Lesson 1 Index , or go to the Indices for Lesson 2, Lesson 3, or Lesson 4.

  2. Three ways to find a community

    1. If you know the LWPS username for the community, add it after lifeworkps.com/ (i.e., for the “New member” community with a username of “new”, type lifeworkps.com/new) into your browser's address box.
    2. In the Search box in the lower right sidebar, type in one word of the community name.
    3. Find an LWPS user (type her name in the Search box, either first or last name) you know who may already have this community listed under either "Owned communities" (i.e., see Global Career Development Facilitator [GCDF] as one of Sally's owned communities) or under “Community membership” in the right sidebar.

  3. When you find the community you wish to join, click on that community name, then click on "Click here to join this community" in the gold box. If you ever want to leave that community, just click on "Click here to leave this community."
  4. Optional: Click on "Click here to join this community" in the gold box to join this "New member!" community.
  5. Optional: Explore some communities: Click on "Pete Hubbard" or "Sally Gelardin" to the right under "Members", then click on one or more of their communities under "Owned Communities" in the right sidebar. Join any that appeal to you.

An AR (access restriction) is one of the key features of the LWPS system. You use ARs to control who can view your posts and files and sections of your LWPS profile.

When you create a new post or edit an existing one (you created), just below the "keywords" box is an "Access Restrictions" pull down. The default AR is "Private". The other two ARs are "Logged in users" and "Public".

When you add or change personal information in the sections of your profile, you will notice that each section has a box below it where you can chose the AR for that section. Some people have no problem using Public or Logged in User Access Restrictions for their e-mail address, phone number(s), mailing address, etc. Others will want to leave them as Private or only visible to a community or a group. (Check out Susan Joyce's Job-Hunt.org article on "Protecting your privacy"). You need to deliberate on who you want to be able to see your profile information.

When you join a community, LWPS automatically adds the AR for that community to your AR pull down. You can select a community AR for a post so that only community members can view your post.

At some point, you may want to make a "Group" AR (GAR) so only a small group of one or more of your LWPS friends can see your posts. You'll learn about GARs in Lesson 3.

  1. First question: The first question you have to ask yourself before you create a post is "Where do I want my post to reside?".
    1. If you want to create a post in your personal/professional weblog: just click on the "Your Blog" button in the upper left corner between "Your Profile" and "Your Files". You are now in your personal/professional LWPS blog.
    2. If you want to create a post in a community weblog:
      1. Find the community. and click on it so you see "Profile Owner" in the "Brief Description" (BD) box in the upper right corner of the webpage. Inside the top of the BD you should see the name of the community.
      2. Click on "Community blog" under "Blog" below the BD so you view the posts in the community blog..
  2. (Re-)read about the Anatomy of a post.
  3. Post a new entry:

First post: Now, why not create your first post. Remember to click on "Your Blog" in the upper left to go to your personal/professional blog. Then click on "Post a new entry".

Have fun! Your first post should be about anything you want to write about. If nothing comes to mind, consider one of the titles in my LifeWork Portal. You can COPY anything that you want.

Tags are not html tags. They are keywords that you add to your LWPS objects (posts, files, and/or sections of your LWPS profile) and see them turn into hyperlinks when others have assigned the same tag to their LWPS objects.

The value of a tag is the ability to help you quickly and easily locate friends, people, posts (yours and others), communities, resources, etc.

After you create a post, review it closely for key words, then type them into the "Keywords" section of your post.

  1. Note: Separate your tags/keywords with commas.
  2. Your initials as tags: Add your initials to every post you make so you can see a list of all of your posts when you click on your initials. (Please do NOT add other member's initials as tags to your posts.) Click on my initials tag "hph" below to see.
  3. Tagcloud: Click on "Tags" in anyone's gold box and see their tagcloud - an alphabetical list of all of tags (keywords) that they have used. Click here to view my (Pete Hubbard's) tagcloud. Click on a few of the larger tags and explore.
  4. Considerations:
    1. You may want to include a tag for part or all of your post title
    2. You may want to have the singular and plural form of a tag, like tag, tags. Thanks, Sally, for these suggestions.
    3. Add these tags to your "Keywords" box for these reasons

4 CEUs for CC articles

NCDA's Career Convergence magazine offers 4 CEUs for each successful article submission. (Read this CF topic by Melanie, and submission guidelines on the NCDA website.)

A proposal: 4? CEUs (yet to be approved by NCDA) for completing the following LWPS task

If someone completes the four (4) LWPS lessosn starting with Lesson 1, they would have spent about four (4) hours acquiring enough knowledge and experience to create the post described below and master most of the activities necessary to be a cybercounselor and teach a client to use LWPS effectively. They should be rewarded with '4' CEUs.

Create a post on your personal blog that will be the basis for awarding you the four (4) CEUs.

  1. Complete Lessons 1-4.
  2. Make Pete Hubbard a friend and join the "New member!" community.
  3. Create a Group AR for only Pete Hubbard.
  4. Create a post on the "New member!" community that looks EXACTLY like this - including the block quote, hyperlinks and the ordered list. Save it with the Group AR for Pete.
  5. Complete your LWPS Profile, including something in your “Brief Description”), then make this sentence a link to your LWPS Profile.
  6. Upload your picture to your "Profile Owner" box.
  7. Create a post on your personal weblog community that looks similar to this post and save it with the “public” AR, and make this sentence a link to it.
  8. Make this sentence a link to your personal weblog showing that you have listed Pete Hubbard as your friend, that you are a member of the "New member!" community, and that you have uploaded your picture to my "Profile Owner" box.
  9. Add a comment to this (post # 656) asking me (Pete Hubbard) to set up a Group AR with just you so I can give you the search-code to find an article on the NCDA website and a topic on CD Forums, which you will link to in the next two steps.
  10. Make this sentence a link to a webpage on the NCDA website that can be found by searching for the search-code obtained in the above step.
  11. Make this sentence a link to a webpage on CD Forums that can be found by searching for the search-code obtained in the above step.

CEUs topics on CD Forums (CF)

  1. CF forum on CEUs with 5 topics
  2. My CF post with many Qs about CEUs
  3. My CF post about CEUs for CF activities. Possibly model for LWPS CEUs.

An AR (access restriction) is one of the key features of the LWPS/Elgg system, It is used to control who can view your posts.

  1. When you create a new post or edit an existing one (you created), just below the "keywords" box is an "Access Restrictions" pull down. The default AR is "Private". (In the next release of LWPS/Elgg, the dafult will be "Logged in users".) The other two ARs for new members are "Logged in users" and "Private".
  2. When you join a community, LWPS automatically adds the AR for that community to your AR pull down. If you make that
community private, I believe (I have not tested this yet) that posts you assign with the community access restriction (AR) will be private as well. However, posts in that acommunity that you assign as "public" or "logged in user" will be viewable by anyone. But you should NOT use this community AR to set up a confidential conversation with your client. See the Group Access Restriction below.

At some point, you may want to make a "Group" AR (GAR) for one or more LWPS users so only they can see your posts.

The following are just a few examples of other Group ARs that you may consider creating someday for private posts to those individuals.

  1. My immediate family
  2. My friend(s)
  3. My Mentor
  4. My co-worker
  5. My lawyer
  6. My doctor
  7. Judy
  8. Sally and Ed
  9. LWPS board
  10. All CCCs
  11. My ...

Creating a Group Access Restriction (GAR)

  1. A GAR will only work with your LWPS friends. So, if you want to have a private conversation with someone, make sure you have made them your LWPS friend.
  2. Click on "Your Network", then "Access Control" and follow the instructions. If you need help, click on the "Page Help" tab.
  3. If you set up an GAR for say your lawyer so you can post private messages to her, she (your lawyer) must also create a GAR for you if she wants to post a private message for only your eyes.
  4. It doesn't matter what you name your GAR, just name it something that you will recognize when you look for it when you want to use it.

The best way to show someone the power of an access restriction or a group access restriction is to ask them to view a pubic post that you created, then change the access restriction to "Private" and ask them to refresh it. They will not be able to see that restricted post.

If you are a cybercounselor with a client, click this link for more information on creating a GAR for each other.

What is Internet presence (IP) and why do I care?

This is the concept of leveraging and cultivating multiple Internet-based channels to extend a person's or company's brand beyond a simple Web page or site. In other words, a Web presence encompasses a user's or company's listing in search engines, message boards, Web sites, mini-sites, word of mouth marketing (WOMM), directories, email, MySpace, YouTube and other Web-based vehicles or destinations. Src: Wikipedia

Being "on the internet" is a bit vague and could mean many different things. We use the term "Internet Presence" to describe all or any of the possibilities, but more specifically, being "present" and visible on the internet so that other people can find you. Here are some of the things your internet presence might include:

Access to the internet
E-mail address
Website
Listings in directories, search engines, etc
Other communication tools
Src: http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/intro/presence.html

How to improve your IP

Your LWPS Profile, all of your posts in your personal, professional and community LWPS weblogs, and all the posts of everyone else who refer to you by name will contribute to increasing the scope of your IP.

Google yourself - A quick way to see your IP

Click here to see a list of posts that I set up for various members to use to Google for their IP.
