May 13, 2006

An AR (access restriction) is one of the key features of the LWPS system. You use ARs to control who can view your posts and files and sections of your LWPS profile.

When you create a new post or edit an existing one (you created), just below the "keywords" box is an "Access Restrictions" pull down. The default AR is "Private". The other two ARs are "Logged in users" and "Public".

When you add or change personal information in the sections of your profile, you will notice that each section has a box below it where you can chose the AR for that section. Some people have no problem using Public or Logged in User Access Restrictions for their e-mail address, phone number(s), mailing address, etc. Others will want to leave them as Private or only visible to a community or a group. (Check out Susan Joyce's Job-Hunt.org article on "Protecting your privacy"). You need to deliberate on who you want to be able to see your profile information.

When you join a community, LWPS automatically adds the AR for that community to your AR pull down. You can select a community AR for a post so that only community members can view your post.

At some point, you may want to make a "Group" AR (GAR) so only a small group of one or more of your LWPS friends can see your posts. You'll learn about GARs in Lesson 3.
