New member! :: Blog :: Change, develop and maintain your BD area(s)

June 26, 2007

If you have not read this How to navigate LWPS and not get lost post, please do so now. You will be taken to other posts and you need to understand how you can return here.

  1. What is the "Brief Description" (BD) box of a personal or a community blog?
  2. My BD box in my personal blog was "seeded" when I registered and I would like to change it.
  3. My BD box is empty. I would like to add some text and links to it.
  4. I created a community and would like to add some text and links to its BD box.

What is the "Brief Description" (BD) box of a personal or a community blog?

The box to the right is called the "Brief Description" (BD) box and is a very important webspace in your personal blog and in all community blogs you might create.

(When you clicked on the link in your BD box to come to this post, you will notice that you left your personal blog and are now in the "New Member!" community blog and the BD box to the right contains content that is specific to this community. You can click your browser's "Return/Back" link to go back to your personal blog, or click on "Your Blog" in the upper left corner. Try it and observe the changes in the BD box as well as other content in the right sidebar below the BD. Then come back to read the rest of this post.)

The BD box is important because it remains static while you are viewing other posts within a blog - either in a personal blog or in a community blog. The BD box is where you will want to maintain links to very important posts within your personal or community blogs.

If you registered for your LWPS account after mm/dd/yy, then your BD box was automatically "seeded" with this post or a variant of it since we or constantly improving it.

When you see text and hyperlinks in any BD box, the source is located in the second of over thirty (30) sections in the "Profile". That section is labeled "Brief description". This section is very small and can not be expanded, so we will recommend that you create a post to update your BD box.

My BD box in my personal blog was "seeded" when I registered and I would like to change it.

  1. You should keep this window open while you execute the following instructions in another window.
  2. Click on "Your Profile" in the upper left.
  3. Locate the "Brief description" section below the "Who am I" section.
  4. Highlight the text in the BD section.
  5. COPY it to your clipboard.
  6. Go to Create a BD post for your BD area below to PASTE your clipboard into this new post.
  7. Follow steps 2-4 above and PASTE your clipboard over the previous text for the BD section.
  8. Set the Access Restriction (AR) for the "Brief description" section to "Public".

  10. Your BD box is now updated
  11. Whenever you want to update your BD box again, just follow these instructions.

My BD box is empty. I would like to add some text and links to it.

  1. You should keep this window open while you execute the following instructions in another window.
  2. You have several options on what to place in your BD box.
    1. A few simple words just to see what happens startign with Step 6 below.
    2. A sentence or two with a hyperlink starting with Step 10 below.
    3. The content of the post that is used to seed the BD box of new accounts starting with Step 12 below.
  3. We'll start with the first and a few simple words, then work our way to the third.
  4. Click on "Your Profile" in the upper left.
  5. Locate the "Brief description" (BD) section below the "Who am I" section.
  6. The BD section should be blank. Type anything you wish into the empty section. NOTE: The BD section of the Profile does not tolerate two consecutive blank spaces. If two blank spaces exist in your BD section, everything after those two spaces will NOT appear. If you want a few blank spaces, use the html "break" code of "<br>". If you want line spacing, use the html "paragraph" code of "<p>".
  7. Set the Access Restriction (AR) for the "Brief description" section to "Public".
  8. Go to the bottom and click on "Save your profile".
  9. Your BD box now contains the text you typed in step 6 above. If that is all you want to do, you can leave this post.
  10. Repeat steps 4-5 and add a hyperlink to the BD section. (Learn more about hyperlinks here.)
  11. Leave the AR as "Public", go to the bottom and click on "Save your profile" and notice your hyplerlink in your BD box. If that is all you want to do, you can leave this post.
  12. Now we'll show you how to add the contents of BD boxes that you may have seen for new LWPS members. After mm/dd/yy, we "seeded" new members BD box with the contents of this post.
  13. So first, let's get the contents of that post and put it into your clipboard.
  14. While using the LWPS WYSIWYG editor to view the post that is used to seed the BD box of new accounts, highlight the entire body of the post and COPY it into your clipboard.
  15. You will have noticed by now that the BD section in the Profile is very small and difficult to edit. That is why we recommend you create a post for your BD area. Please click on that link and create that post.
  16. Your clipboard should contain the source text of your BD area.
  17. Click on "Your Profile" in the upper left.
  18. Locate the "Brief description" section below the "Who am I" section.
  19. PASTE the contents of your clipboard into the empty BD section in your Profil.
  20. Leave the Access Restriction (AR) for the "Brief description" section to "Public".
  21. Go to the bottom and click on "Save your profile".
  22. Your BD box now contains the contents of the seeded BD post.
  23. Whenever you want to update your BD box again, just follow these instructions.

I created a community and would like to add some text and links to its BD box.

  1. You should keep this window open while you execute the following instructions in another window.
  2. The Profile sections for a community are the same as for a personal blog.
  3. Just click on the iconic (picture) image in the BD box and you will go to the community's Profile.
  4. Now, you can follow the steps in the above section (My BD box is empty. I would like to add some text and links to it.) to update your community's BD box..

Create a BD post for your BD area

As noted above, the BD section in the Profile is very small and can not be expanded easily, so we recommend that you perform the following actions to create a post in your personal/community blog to create and maintain the source text and links for your BD box. This will make it very easy for you to manage your BD box.

  1. Your clipboard contains the contents of what you want to PASTE into the body of this new BD post.
  2. In your personal or community blog, click on the "Post a new entry" link in the upper left. (If you want to learn more about creating a post, click here.)
  3. Add a title of something like "Brief Description for my personal blog" or "Brief Description for ... community blog".
  4. PASTE the contents of your clipboard into the Body of this post.
  5. Add your initials to the "Keywords" section. (See why here.)
  6. Add "BD" to the "Keywords" section so you can find your BD post in the future by doing a Search for "BD".
  7. Make your modifications to the text.
  8. In the WYSIWYG editor toolbar at the top, click on the "HTML" link to the left of the "ABC checkmark (spelling)" so you can see the html source code for your BD post. NOTE: You can not leave more than two consecutive blank spaces in your BD text because after you PASTE into your BD profile area in Step 12 below, everything after the first set of two blank spaces will be deleted. (Someday I may ask my programmer to fix this.) If you must have more than two spaces, use "<br>"; use two "<br>"s to do a line break for a new paragraph.
  9. Highlite then COPY the html source code so your BD post is now in your clipboard.
  10. Set the Access Restriction (AR) to whatever you choose. In the interest of the [sharing value of LWPS], we recommend you make it "Public".
  11. SAVE your BD post.
  12. Your clipboard should still contain the contents of your BD area. When you return to the post you were in, you will PASTE it into the BD section in the Profile of your personal or community blog.
  13. Return to
    1. Step 7 in section "My BD box in my personal blog was "seeded" when I registered and I would like to change it."
    2. Step 16 in section "My BD box is empty. I would like to add some text and links to it."
