  1. I copied this template from this post that Sally created. Thanks, Sally. I left most of her original text so you can use it as a model. Customize it to your needs.
  2. Click here to download a MS Word version of this post. If it has been a while since you downloaded this document, download it again so you know you are getting the latest copy.
  3. Go to your community weblog, click "Post a new entry", COPY the MS Word document you downloaded and PASTE it into that new post.
  4. Change [community-name] to your community’s name and customize it to your needs. The "meat" of this post is under the "Instructions" heading below.

Welcome to the [community-name] community

Below are links to lessons and activities for learning how to use LWPS functions and features, and additional activities to facilitate your participation in the [community-name] community.

Purpose of this community

To provide an Internet-based community for potential, aspiring, and experienced entrepreneurs to share strategies for starting and growing a business

Rationale

This exercise gives you an opportunity to participate in an online discussion with contributors to the NCDA "Starting a Career Development Business" monograph and other career entrepreneurs.

Learning Objectives

  • To join and participate in an Entrepreneurship Community on an open-source Internet platform
  • To network with other career entrepreneurs asynchronically (without regard to time or place).
  • To give and receive support in the entrepreneurial process.

Target Population

Current, aspiring, and experienced entrepreneurs

Rationale

Reading a monograph about starting a career development business is a good way to jumpstart your own business. The continued support of others can help you through the building process. An Internet-based entrepreneurial community allows you to participate at your convenience.

Participants

Current, aspiring, and experienced entrepreneurs

Setting

Any place where you can concentrate near a computer with a high-speed Internet connection.

Time Required

Initial registration on the LWPS web platform and learning basic features and functions to meet the learning objectives in this exercise will take less than ½ hour.

Material Needed

Computer, high-speed Internet connection

Instructions

  1. Before you register, click on this link to take Lesson 1, activity 1.
  2. After you register, click on the "LWPS Help" tab in upper right corner of every LWPS webpage to the left of "Account Settings" and take the rest of Lesson 1 and all of Lesson 2. Complete only activities 1 and 2 of Lesson 3 at this time.
  3. Do the following tasks after you review or complete each activity:

    1. After you learn how to find and join an LWPS community, join the [community-name] community.
    2. After you learn how to find and make LWPS friends, click on the Members link in the [community-name] community and select community members to make your "friend".
    3. After you learn about tags and learn how to create a post, create these two posts:

      1. A post in your personal/professional weblog to introduce yourself. Title and tag it with "My Introduction".
      2. A "mailbox" post in your personal/professional weblog where people can communicate with you until you learn what other posts you will or should create in this community. Title and tag it with "Mailbox for {your name}". Click here to read more about mailboxes.

    4. The "Mailbox for [community-name] community" post has been created. After you learn how to add a comment to a post, add one to this "mailbox" post indicating that you have joined the community or to ask a question, or to introduce yourself. Mark it as interesting (learn how) so you know when other people have added their comment to that post. Click the "stop tracking" tab when you no longer want to get e-mails from this post.
    5. After you learn how to edit your LWPS profile, go back to it and complete as much as you wish. Make sure you use the proper access restrictions.

  4. Click on "Table of Contents" in the gold box. Click on one of the topics that interest you in the Table of Contents. View a blog post, add a comment/reply, and/or post a new entry to particpate.
  5. After you register, for help in any of the above tasks, click on LWPS Help in top right header of any LWPS webpage.

Assessment

You have completed the following tasks in the Entrepreneurship Community: (a) viewed a blog, (b) posted a response, and (c) posted a new entry. You now have the basic technical skills needed to participate in the Entrepreneurship Community. To further develop your Internet presence, click on create your Profile.

I just read your post and it is not obvious to me (and perhaps others) how it relates to the purpose of LWPS.

You may not be aware of LWPS's purpose.

It is accessible from the "About LWPS" link in the upper right hand corner of every LWPS webpage.

Please edit your post so it either 1) conforms to the purpose of LWPS or 2) provide an explanation in that post that clearly shows how it relates to the purpose of LWPS. If you choose teh latter, please include this direct link to the purpose in that explanation.

Thank you.

If you are scheduled to give a presentation, or you know of presentations and events related to career cybercounseling and lifework planning, please create a post about the event and post specifics in the post body and give date, time, location and subject information in the post title, then add NFT0297 as a tag.

Click here to view the NCDA Forums topic # 297.
