Who should define "career development" and where should that definition reside?

  • Adding "NCDA" to the search string narrows it to 333 results but nothing from the NCDA website.
  • If I restrict the search to the NCDA website "definition of career development site:ncda.org" I get two (2) results which are policy statements: NCDA Policy and Procedures Guidelines which refers to the Career Development Policy Statement ("Includes definition of career development ... (Periodically updated by the Professional Standards Committee") "Career development" is the total constellation of psychological, sociological, educational, physical, economic, and chance factors that combine to influence the nature and significance of work in the total lifespan of any given individual.
  • Where should the primary definition appear? (Shouldn't it be as easily and quickly accessible as a Wikipedia article?)

There are several different definitions of "career development".

  • "Career development is the total constellation of psychological, sociological, educational, physical, economic, and chance factors that combine to influence the nature and significance of work in the total lifespan of any given individual." [1]
  • “Career development refers to the lifelong psychological and behavioral processes as well as contextual influences shaping one’s career over the life span. As such, career development involves the person’s creation of a career pattern, decision-making style, integration of life roles, values expression, and life-role self concepts.” ([2])
