Richard Bolles describes five (5) worst ways to hunt for a job (p.11-141) and five (5) best ways (p.14-17). (B&N synopsis)

The most successful of the five best ways requires that you to do "extensive homework on yourself", I.e. "Know yourself".
  1. WHAT: Inventory and identify what skills you have that you most enjoy using. (Get the book and read the rest of this paragraph.)
  2. WHERE: Where do you want to use your skills? (Ditto)
  3. HOW: How do you get where you want to go? (Ditto)
Everything in his book leads up to the creation AND MAINTENANCE of "The Flower"2(p.322)

"... In other words, by putting in the hard time that this method requires, you have a 1,200 percent better chance of finding a job than if you just send out resumes!" (p.17)
