Using O*NET to explore and select your top five (5) occupations

O*NET uses over 275 descriptors to describe 812 occupations. Each occupation ...

Quickly and easily finding your best set of occupations in O*NET's DB requires that you know yourself well enough to select the right set of job descriptor search words.

The far left column contains the "Score" for each occupation. Ideally, you woudl won't the score to be "100" for the ocupation you want.

You can narrow down your list of occupations by either using this webpage, or doing a search with a set of keywords or phrases.

There are three (3) goals for this exercise.

Create an LWPS post to explore occupations based upon work values.

Show you what occupations are listed when you search based upon different work values.

Begin to assemble a list of occupations that you will want to explore further.

This process will be much easier and quicker if you open three windows on your computer to see 1) this topic, 2) the O*NET Online webpage below, and 3) your LWPS account.

In another window, one Go to this LWPS post and select "Copy" to the right of the "Edit | Delete" line to copy/create a duplicate post in your personal blog. e a post in your LWPS personal blog and give it a title of title it

Go to this O*NET webpage and read the descriptions for each of the six (6) work values and the 21 corresponding needs.

Select your five (5) MOST important work values/needs and record them in your "My Work Values" post. Keep that post in edit-mode so you can record what happens next.

Select your MOST important work value/need and type it into the Occupation Quick Search box in the upper right corner of the O*NET Find Occupation webpage.

Review the list of occupations and copy any that have some appeal to you. (List them in yoru LWPS post.)

Now type in your second MOST important work value and see the change in the list an drecord any occupations that appeal to you. valuepye add ievalueoselect the five most important work values you have. For example, mine are

Independence
creativity
autonomy
Moral values

Come back often to review your choices.

Now, edit http://online.onetcenter.org/find/quick?s=indepencdence%2C+creativit>this link to list occupations that match. Pick out the top five occupations and list them here

Click on Getting started with your LWPS account

Click on "Your Blog" in the upper left corner, then click on "Post a new entry" and create a new post about anything you wish that is related to your lifework/career planning activities. If you would like a recommendation, consider
1. What are yoru thoughts so far about this LWPS platform,,, your expectations, your concerns?
2. What are your major interests?
3. Do you have a job, ocupation, career in mind?
4. ... or any of the posts that I have listed in my extensive "LifeWork Portal".

LWPS is a place where you can collect and develop (review, reflect and revise) information about yourself that you can use in your lifework/career planning activities.
