Opportunities for you to pursue work that matters to you (your dream job or your LifeWork) can cross your path at any time - and many times - during your life, especially if you plan for and make your luck. Even if you love your current (life)work, circumstances do change.

Have you planned for those opportunities?

Scenario: Your on a train, plane, bus or in an elevator or in a coffee shop, etc and you overhear someone talking about work that you love.

You want to tell them that you share their passion for their work and consider inviting you to join them, but there is no time and you do not have your resume in your back pocket.

But you did plan for this day and you hand them one of your LifeWork cards. It has your "LifeWork Statement" which very briefly describes your passion and a link (URL) to a post in your blog that explains why you are the best person for the job.

That sentence, the blog post and the link in your card is the condensation of everything you did to create your "My LifeWork Portal" which is your summary of everything you know about yourself that will help you make your dreams your LifeWork. (See mine).

About Planned Happenstance

There is a belief entrenched in American culture that career planning Is a logical and linear activity...

... But it's not.

We are expected to choose a career from among thousands of possibilities, often before having a chance to explore one option. Even experts cannot always anticipate the economic, social, and political events that will impact employment. How can anyone be expected to prepare for a career in a world that is constantly emerging?

...

Planned Happenstance is not just luck or being in the right place at the right time. It is a conscious, purposeful, and on-going process that will help you to build a more satisfying and fulfilling career.

Planned Happenstance website of Kathleen Mitchell, Ed.D

Planning to Get Things Done

I ran across the following passage from What Clients Love by Harry Beckwith. I haven't read the book, but it's next on my list.

Planning, whether business planning, career planning, life planning or financial planning, often doesn't receive the respect or attention it deserves.

Quite often the reason -- yeah, we did a plan, put on the bookshelf and never touched again. Planning, like organizing is the prelude to action. The better the planning, the better the preparation, the better the performance. It's not about the plan, it's about the process and what you learn. Good planning is critical and every plan should be reviewed, assessed and revised - continuously. But it should never take the place of action. (Source)

(MISC. to be editted.)

It's not easy deciding what to type into the "Top five" columns of each row. Nor should it be. This is an important task and one should equate it to the rigors of doing a research project - on oneself. Thus, the first line below.

It is not easy deciding what is most important; nor should it be. LifeWork planning is tedious. And life is about decisions.
Your LWP should be a research project you do on yourself that is graded by life.
A plan that is not written is not a plan.
"Planning without action is futile, action without planning is fatal" - Unknown
Plan your work, work you plan!
People don't plan to fail, they fail to plan
